Lucky lovebird Caroline Kelly has bagged £1,500 after winning a national competition launched by RAC to find the nation’s most special journey. Caroline, 42 from Reading, travels the 270 miles to Mullion, Cornwall, every year to recreate her and her husband’s honeymoon from 21 years ago.

The victory follows the launch of an online initiative from RAC which asked Britain’s drivers to share their journeys and chart their movements across the UK.  The site www.whatsmyjourney.co.uk has attracted more than 11,000 visitors and now charts the treasured journeys of British drivers.  Caroline’s journey triumphed over other entries due to her family’s dedication to the tradition and the powerful sentimental value of the route.

Caroline, a business administrator, married her husband, Ian, in 1980 and every year since the couple have retraced their journey from Reading to Cornwall, taking their two children, Jade and Nathan, with them.  The family enjoy a whole host of activities on their annual trip but a traditional cream tea is always top of their list.

Caroline said; “I was stunned when I heard I’d won but also really excited because we’ll be able to go on holiday much more.  The children were very excited too.  We’d love to go to Hawaii in particular but anywhere we can relax and forget about stress would be lovely and of course we love to drive so that’s also a possibility.”

Nick Giles, head of marketing for RAC, said, “We are absolutely thrilled to be awarding this prize to Caroline.  It’s wonderful that she and her family are still making this trip after 21 years together and we wish them every happiness for the future.  This really is something worth celebrating and proves that every journey is important.”
