Rear parking 'raises crime risk'

You and your car are more likely to fall victim to crime if your home has a large parking court at the back, new research has claimed.

A review of modern housing developments found large parking courts at the back of homes "lead to higher levels of domestic burglary and car crime".

The research also claimed that such rear-property parking facilities "performed poorly for crime both of vehicle crime, assault and criminal damage in those case studies that relied upon them significantly".

The study was carried out by Design Council Cabe. Its team said that other design elements such as secluded paths can also lead to an increase in crime, anti-social behaviour and neighbourhood disputes.

The research would suggest car insurance is particularly important for motorists who live in areas featuring rear car parks and secluded pathways.
