Drivers are urged to take care on the roads as forecasts predict snow for the weekend.
A cold front is set to sweep south and east across the UK from the west on Saturday, resulting in snow where slightly milder air meets cold air.
Temperatures hovered at between 1C-4C on Wednesday, and are forecast to drop considerably, with some regions remaining below freezing throughout Thursday and the mercury plunging as low as -10C overnight.
Daytime temperatures are four or five degrees lower than average for February, traditionally often the coldest month of the year.
Motorists are advised to ensure they have adequate breakdown cover in place in case they find themselves stranded during the weekend's wintry weather.
Respite is not expected until Monday.
MeteoGroup forecaster Aisling Creevey said: "Scotland could see between 5 and 10cm of snow on Saturday, and there could be 2-5cm across England and Wales."
