Manufacturers have been hailed over a drive to improve car safety

Safety is always a top concern for motorists when choosing a new car.

And a leading car crash safety testing body is hoping to help make the decision a bit easier, as it publishes a shortlist of the best performing vehicles in its study.

Whatever the vehicle, a car insurance policy is essential for any motorist needing to carry out repairs should the worst happen and they are involved in an accident - a possibility all the more likely given the current icy conditions on many roads.

But the research from Euro NCAP may point drivers in the right direction if they are looking for the cars that cope best with the consequences of a bump.

It gave the new BMW 5 Series the executive car seal of approval as it improved on its previous rating to score five stars. The Japanese duo of Toyota Verso and Honda CR-Z joined the Kia Sportage in getting the respective votes in their sectors. Alfa Romeo's new Alfa Giulietta was named the safest family hatchback.

Euro NCAP secretary general Dr Michiel van Ratingen praised the innovative work of car manufacturers in their drive to make cars more safe for motorists.
