Mr Smith was caught driving at more than twice the legal speed limit on a bypass in North Yorkshire

A pensioner has been caught by police driving at 147mph down a bypass in a luxury car.

Traffic Sergeant John Clayton, the police officer who caught the 68-year-old, said: "This is the worst case of excessive speed I have ever seen in 26 years of policing."

Owen Smith was caught driving down a bypass, in North Yorkshire, at more than twice the speed limit in a Jaguar XKR.

The company director's claims that he was not the driver of the car were dismissed by Scarborough Magistrates' Court who fined him £700 as well as £650 in costs and an admin fee of £15.

Mr Smith also received six points which, due to the six points already on his licence, led to a nine month driving ban.

Sergeant Clayton said: "Swift's disregard for his own safety and the safety of other road users beggars belief.

"The potential consequences of such shocking driving do not bear thinking about."
