Nine car brands reach emission aims

Nine European car brands have already reached their 2012 emissions targets due to their performance in the previous 12 months.
The brands that achieved 2012 EU average emissions targets of 130g/km are Fiat, Citroen, Toyota, Seat, Lexus, Mini, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot and Hyundai.
However the 22 other car brands available in Europe that failed to reach emission targets will not face a penalty this year due to clauses.
One of these loopholes means smaller manufacturers that produce less than 300,000 cars annually only have to reduce the average emissions of the cars they sell by a quarter.
Manufacturers that make bulkier cars, that weigh around 1661kg, have higher emission targets to meet. Large car manufacturer Mercedes has an average emission target of 143g/km per car.
