Drivers 'ignorant of tyre safety'

Most drivers do not know their tyres' tread depth or necessary pressures, a survey showed

Two-thirds of motorists are ignorant of their tyres' legal tread depth and more than half (53.75%) of the required tyre pressures, a survey has revealed.

Unipart Car Care Centres, which carried out the study of 2,000 men and women, said 3mm tyre tread is necessary for winter driving even though 1.6mm is the legal requirement.

Now that the winter cold has begun to bite, the need to cover all eventualities is more important than ever.

The group's experts revealed only 12.85% check their car every few weeks, but Unipart Car Care Centre Panel chairman Tim Ferris said drivers can be more confident about the safety of their vehicle by spending just 10 minutes each week performing simple checks.

Drivers are still advised that harsh weather like that of last winter is due so they need to be ready for heavy snow, fog and widespread ice.
