Half of parking ticket appeals work

Approximately half the number of people who appeal against being given a parking ticket in England are successful, the Government has said.

Penalty charge notices were either cancelled or waived for 47% of those who submitted an objection to the ticket in 2009-10, leaving the motorist with some extra cash to put towards car insurance costs.

The Department of Transport also said 59% of those who argued against being given an off-street parking ticket, which applies to car parks, were successful.

Departmental figures showed that 1.84 million appeals were made against parking tickets during 2009-10, compared with 1.86 million in 2008-09.

However, the number of appeals lodged against car park penalty charges increased from 450,000 to 500,000.

So, in 2009-10, a total of 860,000 parking tickets were cancelled, compared with 870,000 the year before, and 300,000 car park penalties were scrapped, compared with 260,000 in 2008-09.

An estimated 7.14 million parking tickets were issued in England in 2009-10 compared with 7.42 million in 2008-09, and around 1.8 million car park penalty notices were handed out to motorists in 2009-10 compared with 1.67 million the year before.
