Sunderland says goodbye to Micra

The last Nissan Micra has been made at the firm's Sunderland plant -marking the end of 19 years of production at the site.

The popular model will now be made in India, with the Sunderland plant moving its focus to the production of other models such as the Note, Qashqai, Qashqai +2 and the Juke, which is being seen as the natural successor to the Micra.

A breakdown of the Micra's life in figures reveals how the diminutive runaround has had a massive impact on the local workforce, transforming the plant into a multi-model, high volume facility which produced 1.4 million K11 Micras in its first decade of manufacture and nearly one million K12 models in the following eight years.

Production supervisor Keith Watson said workers at the plant should be proud that the millions of Micras that have taken to roads across the world all began their life in Sunderland.

"It's sad to see Micra production end in Sunderland but we have a fantastic product replacing it in the Juke. It's quite an achievement for the plant to think there are well over two million Sunderland-built Micras out there," he said.
