Johnson opens 'cycle superhighways'

Two "cycle superhighways" have been unveiled in London by Boris Johnson.

The new routes, painted in blue, are designed to make it safer and quicker for cyclists to navigate the streets of London as part of a programme of changes that Mr Johnson hopes will usher in a "cycling revolution" in the build up to London 2012.

Speaking at the launch of the pilot scheme on Clapham Common in south-west London, Mr Johnson said even the most attentive journey planner will find the new routes offer the quickest and safest trips to and from Merton and the city centre via the A24 and A3, and Barking to Tower Gateway via the A13 and Cable Street.

"It's part of a programme of things that are going to change the urban landscape, what it's like to live in and to move around in London," he said.

"In the run up to the Olympics it's part of our vision of a cleaner, greener, safer city, where you have a cycling revolution."

The London Mayor said he wanted to boost the number of cyclists using London's roads, adding that the new superhighways would establish the capital as "the best big city on earth to live in."
