Honda is planning to launch two environmentally friendly vehicles in 2012

Joining the race to produce eco-friendly vehicles, Honda has announced plans to launch an electric car and a plug-in hybrid in 2012.

The Japanese carmaker is planning to release its latest environmentally friendly vehicles in the US and Japan.

Company president Takanobu Ito said: "Honda has no future unless we achieve significant reduction in CO2 emissions. The next 10 years will be a true test for Honda's survival."

The company is yet to reveal details about the new cars, however, it stressed on its strategy to develop more vehicles based on the green technology. Currently, Honda manufactures the Insight and CR-Z hybrids.

Other Japanese manufacturers involved in electric cars include Nissan, which has already begun taking orders for its new Leaf electric car.

Meanwhile, car giant Toyota is also planning to release an eco-friendly model in 2012. Also, Mitsubishi's electric vehicle, the iMiEV, was released earlier this year.
