Car production up 44% in April

Car production rose 44% year-on-year in April signalling "a good start to the second quarter of 2010", according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

New figures from the group show 98,290 cars were manufactured across UK during the month, with the total for January-April 2010 rising 64.9% from the same period last year.

Production of commercial vehicles (CV) also showed a healthy 40.8% increase to 10,777 in April, and 44.3% rise for the first four months of 2010.

Engine production jumped 38.2% last month and was up 41% on the January-April 2009 figure.

A massive 150.5% increase was recorded in car production and 102.4% rise in CV production for the home market during April.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "A number of UK product launches and the introduction of new technologies are helping to sustain demand despite an expected slowdown following the end of the scrappage scheme.

"The home market saw a significant increase in the month, a positive indication of a strengthening economy and an improvement in consumer confidence."
