Vauxhall is to shed 154 administrative jobs in the UK on top of 396 manufacturing posts at its Luton plant

More than 520 manufacturing and administrative jobs are to be axed at a Vauxhall site in Luton, it has been reported.

Following a jobs cull across Europe, the car giant is to shed 396 jobs at its Bedfordshire plant, which produces vans and 154 admin posts, Vauxhall's chief executive Nick Reilly confirmed.

Vauxhall said production in Luton will continue for the next three years, while new business contracts are being sought. The firm predicts it will break even by 2011 and will be in profit within the next two years.

A total of 8,300 posts in sales and administration and manufacturing will be lost across Europe, including 2,377 jobs in Antwerp, Belgium, as the firm aims to reduce its capacity by a fifth.

Meanwhile 900 jobs in Spain will go and 1,800 jobs will be axed in Bochum, 860 in Russelsheim, 300 in Kaiserslautern, and 300 in Eisenach, all in Germany.

No jobs will be lost at the Ellesmere Port factory on Merseyside.
