Toyota has said that all its future models will come with an additional safety feature in the form of a brake override system.
The mechanism will ensure that the brake is activated if drivers accidentally press it at the same time as the accelerator.
Toyota president Akio Toyoda announced the new measure as the Japanese car manufacturer grappled with an accelerator problem, which has forced the recall of millions of vehicles worldwide.
In addition to the new safety precaution, Toyota will also appoint an official to monitor quality in each geographical location and improve communication among regions.
A special committee, headed by Mr Toyoda, will look at upgrading the carmaker's quality controls and will hold its first meeting on March 30.
The Toyota chief said since he is focused on the new task, he will not be present at the US Congressional hearing on safety lapses in the firm's vehicles. Executives from Toyota US will attend the hearing.
