Third lane to ease M50 congestion

A third lane has been added to the M50 around Dublin in a bid to reduce traffic congestion during the rush hour.

It is hoped the new lane will cut travelling times in both directions between Junction 10 at Ballymount and Junction 14 at Sandyford.

Fed Barry, of the National Roads Authority, said it was a "major step in the right direction".

He said good progress was being made with the overall scheme but upgrades still needed to be completed at some junctions.

In recent weeks 22km of additional lanes and junctions have been added to the M50 to quicken traffic flow.

Improvements to junction 4 (Ballymun), junction 11 (N81 Tallaght) and junction 12 (Scholarstown/Firhouse) are expected to be completed by the end of the month by the firm M50 Concession.

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey said the latest extension is great news.

"It will help people to get to work quicker, will relieve traffic congestion and will improve business," he said.

"I am pleased to see further projects being delivered on time and on budget. This will benefit both drivers and consumers."

The project is due to be complete by the end of the year.
