Freeze brings transport problems

The UK's coldest winter for more than 30 years has seen major problems on all transport systems.

On Monday, roads were disrupted by accidents on major routes, and railway passengers faced delays caused by overruns from weekend engineering works. With air travel, some flights at Luton Airport in Bedfordshire were disrupted.

And more cold weather is on the way after England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have seen the lowest temperatures since the late 1970s, said MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association.

A warm front is moving north from Cornwall to bring more snow across parts of the country with the Midlands, North Wales and northern England expecting 2 to 5cm. The South East can expect rain and perhaps sleet and Scotland will stay cold with possibly snow on Tuesday.

MeteoGroup's Tom Tobler said: "Once that's moved through we are in some milder air, but it's going to be fairly cloudy and unsettled as the cold air gets pushed away. England and Wales will be unsettled with heavy rain and brisk winds, then we may see the cold starting to return later in the week." Next week also looks unsettled, he added.
