Broadway traffic-free zones to stay

An experiment to keep traffic away from New York's famed Broadway in Times Square and Herald Square is to be made permanent.
New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced that the pedestrian plazas created on two stretches of the Broadway last year will be retained.
The eight-month trial plan was aimed at easing traffic and improving safety on the busy route, as well as reducing pollution.
Although traffic pattern data published by the city indicates the trial may not have delivered as much as it had promised, Mr Bloomberg said it was successful enough for the traffic-free zones to remain.
Pedestrians and tourists have welcomed the project, but some motorists have voiced their annoyance at the restriction.
