£2bn deal to help motorway traffic

A £2 billion contract to improve motorways includes plans to reduce congestion on the M60 and M62 around Manchester.
The work involves conversion of the M60 hard shoulder between junctions 8 and 12 east of Manchester and the M62 hard shoulder between junctions 18 and 20 to the north of the city.
The overall contract also covers the M1 near Sheffield, the M62 at Bradford, the M6 at Walsall and the M5 near Bristol.
Work to be carried out to reduce the two motorway congestion hotspots around Manchester follows a successful pilot project on the M42 in Warwickshire, which managed traffic using the hard shoulder to relieve congestion at peak times.
Balfour Beatty, the engineering, construction, services and investment business, was appointed as one of the four delivery partners for the Highways Agency's managed motorways schemes for England.
