Vauxhall car plant escapes job cuts

Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port site on Merseyside would escape redundancies taking place across Europe under a proposal to switch to a three-shift production schedule at the car plant.

The plant, which had switched from three to two-shift production, has proposed a plan to introduce a night shift to increase its production.

Vauxhall said: "The proposed plan is for Ellesmere Port to move to a three-shift production operation in 2011.

"To support the launch in 2010 of the new Astra Sports Tourer and to prepare for the third shift introduction in 2011, the plan is for no redundancies as all current labour would need to be utilised to staff the third shift."

The motor giant added: "Plant and trade union senior leadership will now work together to develop the details of the plan in order to support the future strategy for Ellesmere Port."

However, unions expect that there would be around 300 job cuts at its Luton van plant. The plans will be outlined in the next few days.

Earlier the company announced plans to cut 9,000 jobs across Europe, saying that up to 60% will be in Germany.
