Devon motorists hit by flooding

Heavy rainfall has caused severe disruption for motorists and residents in Devon with water levels reaching as high as four feet in places, as the wintry weather that has caused chaos in Cumbria continues.

Fire crews from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were called to assist police near Exeter in the early evening as floodwater continued to rise up to the roofs of cars.

Firefighters rescued the occupants of a vehicle trapped in floodwater in Devonport, Plymouth as the waters took hold around the county.

One driver had to climb up onto the roof of his van after it became trapped in more than 3ft of floodwater in Venton, Sparkwell.

Around 18in of water flooded the road at Fellowes Place, in Millbridge, near Plymouth, which was pumped out by firefighters.

The basements of four properties in Mutley, near Plymouth, were also affected by floodwater along with houses in Elburton, near Plymstock, and Ivybridge.

Firefighters also rescued three people from a car trapped in floodwater in Devonport, Plymouth, and another vehicle from water in Alston Cross, Ashburton.
