Popular models Vauxhall Astra and Mazda3 have been awarded the maximum five-star rating in the European New Car Assessment (Euro NCAP) safety tests.
Mazda Motor's new Mazda3 achieved top scores through a combination of strong results in the adult occupant, child occupant, pedestrian protection and safety assist areas.
The Mazda3 has followed the Mazda6 in receiving a top score under the new NCAP rules.
Vauxhall's sixth generation Astra scooped the highest-point score for its anti-whiplash active head restraint system and for passenger occupant protection. ESC and adaptive lighting also contributed to the model's top marks.
This year Euro NCAP has started a new evaluation system that awards a single overall vehicle safety rating combining the scores achieved in four areas of assessment: Adult Occupant Protection, Child Protection, Pedestrian Protection and Safety Assist.
And both the models achieved the top scores under the new system.
