Advanced Driving enables drivers to operate their cars with greater control, by teaching them how to improve their road position and handling skills. This is done by training drivers to use the road and traffic conditions more effectively, allowing them to adapt to whatever situation or weather condition is presented to them. This teaching method comes from Roadcraft – The Police Driver Handbook’s ‘System of car control' – which sets out to create drivers who are more considerate and observant. For drivers looking for alternative ways to improve their driving skills, an Advanced Driving course won’t just improve your skills, but may also help you become a safer driver.
What is advanced driving and how could it affect my car insurance?
Though the standard driving test will prepare you for everyday driving, Advanced Driving can help to prepare you for the more hazardous conditions that all drivers have to face sooner or later on the road. Being able to drive comfortably and confidently in snow, ice and sleet will help you deal with those treacherous conditions. With a number of winter accidents resulting from skidding, knowing how to avoid a skid or even what to do when you are skidding, will make sure you don’t become another statistic.
The Advanced Driving test is founded on the basic principles of courteous driving, centred on coordinated handling, appropriate speed in the correct gear and allowing for safe stopping distances. Having this qualification may help prevent accidents and keep you and your passengers safe.
As well as being a safer driver, being an Advanced Driver can also have positive effects on your finances. By being trained to spot potential incidents in advance, it could help you cut the chances of having an accident. This means Advanced Drivers may be less likely to lose their No Claims Discount on their Car Insurance policy. The test is provided by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) or the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) and covers city and rural roads, as well as motorways, and lasts approximately an hour and a half.
