What is a dash cam?

Even the most cautious and careful drivers cannot control events outside of their vehicles. Numerous road users have experienced dangerous and erratic drivers, but now they can actually do something about it and use cameras to help identify dangerous drivers. With the in-car camera you can keep a video record of what occurred and when. This footage can then be used to help resolve disputes ranging from the sequence of events, to identifying who was at fault in event of an accident.

How do dash cams work?

Dash cams are cameras that can be affixed to the interior and exterior of your car. They can either be connected to the car’s electrical system, via the vehicle’s cigarette lighter socket, or they can be hardwired. They can be attached using either suction cups, a bracket or sticky pad, and many cameras can be removed and reattached as needed.

They are designed for continuous recording when you are driving and provide video evidence in case of an accident. The kind of in-car camera you buy will depend on your personal requirements. Some road users, who may live in a high crime area, might want to install a standard camera to capture footage of criminals damaging their car. Other road users might want to install a dash cam with a GPS system, as they record location, direction of travel, speed, latitude and longitude.

If in the unfortunate event you are involved in an accident and you have informed us that your car has a dash cam, you could be asked to send us your video evidence. Once the footage has been reviewed we will then contact you to let you know whether or not it can be used to help settle your claim.

Dash Cam Statistics

Nearly three million motorists are now recording their journeys with in-car cameras, according to a new RAC study. In fact, 25% believe fitting a dash cam will improve their driving, while 69% of those who have had an accident, involving a dispute over who was responsible, think having one would have been useful. Now motorists are starting to see the value of dashboard cameras, an increasing number of insurers are accepting footage when reviewing claims and some companies are offering discounts to those policyholders that have a fully-functioning dash cam installed in their vehicle.
