How much does it cost if I'm not a member?

If you've broken down already and you're not a member of RAC, we can still help you. Simply call 0800 197 7815* to speak to an advisor, quoting WJ0003. You'll be able to join and get Roadside Cover the same day. Prices will differ from those shown online. Prices for this service may fluctuate throughout the year, so please call the number above for details.

Included in this fee is an emergency call-out charge which covers you for assistance at the roadside or at home for that day. If we can't get you going again we'll give you a tow of up to 10 miles to either an address of your choosing or a local garage.

A summary of all our options including standard prices and cover details can be found on our RAC Breakdown page. Follow the three simple steps to compare the options; the 'Your Quote' box on the right of the page shows the price for your selected cover.

* Calls may be recorded and/or monitored.

How much do you charge for a call-out?

There is no charge for an RAC member making a call-out provided you have the appropriate breakdown cover. However, there are limits to the number of free call-outs you can make in any one year of membership:

  • In your first year with RAC you are entitled to up to five call-outs without extra charge (six if you have joint cover and seven if you have family cover).
  • If you've been a member for five or more completed years, your entitlement will increase by an additional two call-outs.

If you exceed your entitlement you'll have to pay an additional charge of no less than £59.00 per call-out, payable prior to us providing the Roadside assistance or At Home service only.

Why has the price increased?

From time to time it is necessary to review our prices in line with the current market conditions. This includes a number of factors, such as cost of service, extra features or cover which we may provide.

For example, in 2008 we increased our patrol to member ratio - resulting in quicker response times and a more efficient service. As our membership has grown, this has meant we have had to increase the number of patrols we keep on the road. This is particularly important, as the main concern for most of our members is that we reach them swiftly and efficiently when they break down.

We also invest heavily in technology, such as PVS (Patrol Vehicle Systems) - a new interface for patrol vans to send and receive iCAD messages, as well as giving more functionality in terms of browser and information access. And we've also invested in equipment that will help our patrols repair vehicles on the road (e.g. locking wheel nut tool) rather than recover them.

If you would like to discuss the price before renewing, please call 0844 891 3111*.

Opening hours
Mon-Fri 8am to 9pm, Sat - 8.30am to 5pm, Sun - 10am to 4pm

* Calls will be charged at 3p per minute from a BT landline. Calls from other networks may vary.

Can I pay by monthly direct debit / in monthly instalments?

Yes. When you apply online and pay by direct debit, you will have the option of paying for your membership on a monthly basis. If you prefer you can also pay for your membership in equal instalments over the first four months of membership. There will be a surcharge included in the price shown when paying by either of these options.

Please note that when paying monthly, due to the time taken to set up a direct debit instruction with your bank, the first two monthly payments may need to be taken in the same month.

You can also specify a preferred date for your direct debit payments, but only if paying annually or in equal instalments over the first four months of membership.

If you need to change your bank details, call freephone 0800 092 6607.

How and when shall I receive my cashback?

The cashback offer is no longer available.  This has been replaced with the online discount of up to 25%.

If you joined RAC while the cashback offer was still running, the following details will apply.

Cashback is available when you buy Roadside Cover plus one or more of our additional cover options. When you buy cover online, you will pay the normal price (not including the cashback amount). Your cashback will then be sent to you within 40 days of your cover start date, subject to your policy still being in force after your 14-day cooling-off period. The cover start date is the date you requested your cover to start. There are no extra forms to fill in – your cashback cheque will simply be sent to you in the post.

Can I pay by MAESTRO / SWITCH card?

We do not currently offer MAESTRO card (the new name for SWITCH) as a payment option. However, you can still pay by selecting 'Direct Debit' and using the current account details on your MAESTRO card to pay. As all online Breakdown cover products are priced on an annual continuous basis, this would work in almost exactly the same way and be renewed automatically after 12 months unless you tell us otherwise.

Do I get a discount if I have insurance with RAC?

What is continuous monthly membership/payment?

When paying on a continuous monthly basis, once you have bought RAC breakdown cover, you don't need to worry about renewing as you'll continue to be covered as long as your monthly payments keep on being taken unless you tell us otherwise. You will receive an online discount when paying by this method but, as it costs RAC more to administer your cover on this basis, there is a surcharge included in the total price you see.

We'll send you a reminder of your policy details and payment options approximately 28 days before the 12-month anniversary of you starting your breakdown cover with us. This reminder will include details of any change in price or terms and conditions being made to your policy. We'll automatically collect payment on the same basis as you originally paid unless you tell us otherwise.
