Unhappy Astra CDTI Stratup Noise

I have squealing noise on startup. Car is under warranty, dealer has had it for over 20 days but can't find the cause. Vauxhall admit there is a problem but dealer says i'll have to wait until something breaks before they can fix. Details on www.snlag.com. Anyone with similar problem or think they know the cause please email me at address on this site.

Question

i think the noise could be a drive belt tensioner or bearing that the belt goes round. only confusing thing is that it sounds like its about to break up. if thats the case why the hell hasnt ure garage noticed it!

Chris, thanks for your suggestion. The garage say they've replced the belt and tensioner twice already.

Thanks MrDanno, this does sound like the same problem. I'll add a post there so they can compare the sound from their cars with the recording I've posted on www.snlag.com.

Hi Astradiasta.
Sorry , the recording isn't the same as I am still getting.
As I've said before mine is a "fluttering" sound that seems mainly on overrun or light throttle, even in tickover.
The latest I have from Vauxhall is it seems to be coming from the high pressure fuel lines. I had been told that they were planning on a redesigned fuel pipe???
When I put my car in for service and NOISE the garage hadn't heard about the modification.
A few of our guys in the fleet are complaing about it, but nothing is getting done.
I will give our fleet managers another reminder that it hasn't gone away.
If I get any result I will post back.

Thanks for the reply Nick73. Good luck with your problem.
If anyone else has any idea what is causing this annoying noise (www.snlag.com) please reply.

Update - I discovered this morning that the noise is worse and stays permanently when I switched the fan on full to defrost the windscreen. This sounds to me like it could be the alternator but Evans Halshaw said they had changed this (twice I think). What other things could cause this??
Is there any way to check if the alternator has actually been replaced?

Wink

check for damaged rollers or components the drive belt goes round mechs. can use a stethascope with a pipe on the end to check for bearing noise when the engine is running. they have to be careful though as there is often little space to do this in the engine bay!

Just got the list of components replaced from Evans Halshaw:

Generator Rebuilt (Reconditioned Alternator I assume)
Tensioner
Idler Pulley
Belt V Ribbed
Gasket
Water Pump
Pulley
Belt
Compressor

The squealing noise is WORSE than ever now - especially when the fan is on.

EH have obviously tried to fix this but Vauxhall have refused to do any more. I can't believe that Vauxhall are treating me this way. This should serve as a warning to anyone thinking of buying a Vauxhall what to expect if and when they get a problem. If this is the way they treat their warranty customers beware when you get a problem outside of warranty.

Chris thanks for your suggestion - I'll try this at the weekend.
