Default Stressed drivers!

Firstly let me introduce myself, my name is James Partridge and I'm currently a fourth year student studying Automotive Design at Coventry University. For my major project I plan to examine how a driver's disposition impacts on their driving experiences. This will help me to arrive at a final design that can alleviate driver stress. I would greatly appreciate your co-operation by assisting me with my investigation through answering the question below, Thank you!

Scenario: You have had a bad day at work and you're making your way home by car. You get onto the motorway and find heavy congestion has brought you to a standstill.

How would you react and deal with this situation?

How long have you been a driver?

That exact scenario must apply to thousands of motorists who use the M25 on a daily basis.
If it happened to me, I would put a very down-beat cassette or CD on, take a deep breath, and just sit and mellow out with the music. There has never seemed any point to stressing over something which you can't do anything about.
In the 70s I used to commute a ten-minute drive, which meant crossing the A40. If I left home two minutes late, it could add two hours on my journey time, same as leaving to get home. Been driving for over 40 yrs.

That's the way to do it. (Courtesy of Punch)

The obvious answer is that your"bad day" has no legal standing in regards as to how you drive. Every driver is fully aware of his/her responsibilities behind the wheel; the most valuable bit of research (if it were possible) would be to find out exactly why drivers degenerate into desperados when the going gets tough.
Then, perhaps, some headway could be made to help them not to do it.

Welcome to the site Jaycoventryuni, that is an interesting first post you put up.

Well, I used to drive the A9 (old one before it was rebuilt)every weekend when I was working away from home.

It was a 3 hour drive full of stress! When I felt myself getting angry, I used to put it in a cassette that I had made of my favourite relaxing music, sit back and wait for an overtaking opportunity

I have been driving for 35 years now.

I've been driving for 56 years. Cars were not so forgiving then, if you did something stupid.
If we all drove the modern cars at the speeds and with the same care as we did 50 years ago, the roads would be so safe that the emergency services would be touting for business.
