Default Problem with 1999 ford focus: Speedometer

When I start the engine the speedometer dial has a surge and goes all the way to the top and then comes back down. It will then work normally for a while then suddenly the speedometer dial will drop to zero. This can happen at anytime but wont stay on zero for very long, it will correct itself and tell me my correct speed.

Does anybody know what the problem might be? Could it be the speed signal sensor? Could it be that i need a new battery?

I'm currently having this problem with my focus, same year and model. It's been suggested to me that the sensor maybe loose, and looking at the haynes manual its not a hard part to replace/check, but reading here it looks like maybe it could be an electrical fault?

I've also just come across a peice of information on another fault listing site, a common cause for this problem with cars up until the 2002 model is the cylinder head temperature sensor lead and the ignition leads touching and causing interferance. I am going to check this on mine and let you know.

Could possibly be the speed signal sensor-have the fault codes read to see if any faults are logged.

What a coincidence. The speedometer of my focus 1.6 2000 has started doing this too. I'm driving at constant speed when suddenly the bar will drop to zero for a few seconds then go back to normal.
Anyone managed to find out what exactly is wrong and needs fixing?
    Thanks

I have an 03 fiesta and have the same problem with the speedo dropping to zero and then returning to the correct speed... have taken it to many garages (including electrical specialists) and have been told they will only look at it when the speedo doesnt work at all (its been an intermittant problem since dec'06). Any ideas/thoughts would be appreciated.

Unhappy Ford Focus 1.4 CL speedometer

I've recently had a similar problem with my Focus. While driving the speedometer indicator just drops down and does sometime come back up... but not always. I talked to an electrician today about this (he changed my starter motor btw... cost 128 pounds in all - is that a lot?). he couldn't see any problems with the wiring and suggested there might be a problem with the actual dashboard indicator...

    Angry 1999 Ford Focus Speedo

I Have Had A Problem With My Speedometer For A While Now, It Started By Being Erratic And Now Upon Starting The Car It Will Flick Up To The Top And Then Stay At 0. As You Drive The Maximum It Will Go Up To Is 15 Mph. I Took It To Ford, They Chekced The Error Codes, But None Told Them What The Problem Was. They Put In New Software And Changed The Accelerator Cable. None Of This Sorted It Out And Cost 220.

They Told Me It Is The Speed Sensor Which Plugs In To The Gear Box And Quoted 138 To Fix. They Advised Me That When Removing It If A Pin Dops Out Of The Sensor In To The Gear Box They Will Need To Strip The Gear Box To Remove It At An Extra 500.

I Held Off For A While And Have Just Had The Speed Sensor Changed. At 138. This Has Still Not Sorted It Out. Ford Then Wanted To Run Another Diagnositic To Check For Error Codes At Another 48, But They Were Not Clear About The Diagnosis.

Ford Now Tell Me It Will Be A Faulty Instrument Cluster At 350 But Are Not 100% Sure This Will Sort It Out.

Has Anyone Got Any Other Suggesions As I Nearly Give Up After Spending Just Over 400 On Nothing!
