1999 Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec. At 51,000 miles 'the reverse gear idler broke' and a new gear box was fitted. After 13months, at 56,000 miles, the new gearbox has broken.
The Ford garage that fitted the gearbox have said,
'the Main shaft bearing is broken. We believe the above fault has happened due to a loss of oil, possibly due to a leaking reverse light switch. The loss of oil would have caused excessive overheating within the gearbox, resulting in the cracking of the shaft bearing.'
At 42,000 miles Ford replaced the gearbox selector seal, because 'the gear selector shaft seal was leaking oil'.
Any advice on whether this problem might have caused the gearboxes to break. 2 gear boxes breaking in such a short period of time is more than a coincidence? Who should I ask for a second opinion on the faults? Any help
