    Angry ford focus gearbox problems

1999 Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec. At 51,000 miles 'the reverse gear idler broke' and a new gear box was fitted. After 13months, at 56,000 miles, the new gearbox has broken.

The Ford garage that fitted the gearbox have said,
'the Main shaft bearing is broken. We believe the above fault has happened due to a loss of oil, possibly due to a leaking reverse light switch. The loss of oil would have caused excessive overheating within the gearbox, resulting in the cracking of the shaft bearing.'

At 42,000 miles Ford replaced the gearbox selector seal, because 'the gear selector shaft seal was leaking oil'.

Any advice on whether this problem might have caused the gearboxes to break. 2 gear boxes breaking in such a short period of time is more than a coincidence? Who should I ask for a second opinion on the faults? Any help

    Hi

In the case of the first gearbox it is possibly that the leaking selector shaft seal could have caused sufficient oil loss to cause overheating of the internals.
In the case of the second gearbox again it is possible that the leak caused by the reverse switch could have caused overheating of the internals.
But two questions did you notice with either gearbox unusual noises of difficulty to select any gears?

    Default ford focus gearbox problems

    Hi Mat

Thanks for your help, very much appreciated. Yes, there was a problem selecting reverse gear with both gearboxes. The clutch would have to be released and reengaged otherwise reverse could not be selected. Any recommendations of mechanics who could give an opinion on the problem.

    thanks again.

The only thing I can suggest is that you find a reputable gearbox specialist in your area to give you a second opinion.Maybe have a look in the yellow pages?
