    I joined the RAC because i travel often to shows with a trailer as a hobby. I had a blow out so changed the wheel with the spare and took it steady the rest of the way home stopping regular intervals to check my tyres etc. It was on the M4 j36 services that i noticed a tyre starting to peal it's tread so i decided not to go back on the motorway but to call assistance. The RAC refused to come out as i had no spare, i was off the highway, my car was fine and i had an illegle tyre but would do me a private recovery for 256. With no option i paid the money and then described my Trailer length, load weight, vehicle etc. The contractor who turned up said he had very little info and did'nt even know i had a trailer. He could take my trailer home so loaded it up and took off. Three junctions later he pulled in and said he could'nt take it any further due to the length of the trailer putting the weight too far back. Fair enough. the RAC controller then rang me again explaining that i needed a bigger vehicle to recover me and would refund the mileage cost but not the call out and i would be passed to commercial recovery. They quoted between 550-750 to take me 70 miles home which i did'nt accept as i got a private firm to do it for 300.
    The RAC still took the 256 i originally paid and i've sent a email on 6th may explaining and someone is supposed to ring me back within 5 days...i'm still waiting!. I spoke with someone who tells me that customer care is only open mon-fri 8-5, with work this is all outside of my hrs and i have no land line at work.
    I feel pretty let down as a member and i'm not too sure if i will be renewing my membership at this rate.

    Some years ago, on a Sunday, I had a puncture on my caravan while driving home, and no spare. I called out the RAC who sent a recovery truck. The driver offered to go some distance to the nearest place that would be open on Sunday, to collect a tyre for me. I opted to have the caravan relayed home instead as I could buy tyres much more cheaply locally during the week. I did have relay/recovery and there was no extra charge at all.

    Would I get the same service these days?

    it does'nt sound like it, i certainly did'nt get the same service, in fact the service that i paid for i did'nt get either, my problem is they still took the full 256 from my account and are yet to give me anything back and although they say i'm only going to get 171 back minus 85 call out they still did'nt provide what i paid for so should i get it all back ? after all if you buy something thats not fit for purpose you should be entitled to a full refund. They provided a private recovery and was unable to do it due to the wrong size vehicle being sent. we will see.
