Called out RAC when a warning light came on on my 11-plate Golf, still under warranty.
Patrolman cleared fault off car computer to get me out of 'limp' mode.
VW won't repair under warranty as unable to obtain the code and submit it for reimbursement from VW HQ
Having paid a premium price for a VW which has a very expensive fault at 24,400 miles and paid for RAC cover, each are blaming the other while I'm stuck in the middle with no car.
Only thing to do is to have it back and wait for the fault to reappear; hope this doesn't happen in the middle of the motorway and it goes into limp mode again. RAC will only electronically submit the fault code to VW if you are member under VW scheme and then they send out a VW specialist patrolman.
So if you buy a VW and it goes wrong, DO NOT LET AN ORDINARY RAC PATROLMAN clear the fault.
Not happy with either organisation. And as someone with little mechanical knowledge, how was I to know???
Did the Patrol who cleared the code make a note of it? Perhaps RAC can contact him and obtain it for you?
Yes, thanks for replying.
The patrolman made a note on the Customer Assistance Report of the code; Kevin Crawford of RAC Customer 'Care' refuses to contact VW to have a direct dialogue and says that their remit ended with Roadside Assistance; they would only electronically forward fault code to people who have RAC cover through VW Breakdown Assistance, and then send a specialist VW technician to the breakdown and only then their protocol is to electronically send the fault code prior to deleting. I didn't have VW Breakdown Assistance as I needed family cover and only two of us have VW's, so bought RAC cover.
I merely want to flag up, through this forum, of the problem I have encountered and don't want anyone else to have the hassle. I think VW and RAC need to publicise their protocols regarding breakdowns under warrantyl Let the buyer beware!
The fault code logged in the ECU can only be cleared ( by us - The RAC ) if we fix the fault .
These are strict protocols set by VW .
If there was a poor connection is the wiring plugs etc then the patrol was ok in trying to clear the codes .
Good to know thanks Not sure i'm going to bother joining up! Just keep hearing bad things!
