    I think the reason why they say that about older cars, is because they are cheaper to buy and insure, for newly qualified drivers.Personally I think you can pick up a much higher spec car, when they are older. I bought a top of the range Mazda 323F quite cheap, and it was a lovely car to own and drive.The only reason I sold it was because my wife couldn't bend down to get into it, after she had a bad fall, and damaged her back?I sold it to her son, and he just loves it, as a good first time car.

    Point taken Smudger, you're right. I made the mistake of forgetting that it depends on the car : which your example demonstrates. I do think that the underlying principle of having the best car possible within budget applies. Whether it is a newer or older car is not relevant, my error.
