    Default Clio fault codes

    Hi all,

I have just had someone out to do a diagnostic check on my car after a couple of warning lights came on last week. The lights were the electronic fault and the exhaust gas monitor. When the guy tried to switch it on today, there was also the battery light and another engine lights flashing. The car would not even start today.

He has done the test, written the codes down and he has said I need to take it to Renault as no one else can fix this

    The car is a 2005 (55 plate) Renault Clio 1.2 16v, a Clio II.

The fault codes are - (685) - unknown
638 - motorised throttle unit control
    560 - battery voltage
    606 - computer

He thinks I need a new ECU.

What I'd like to know is - what am I likely to need doing, and how much could I potentially be looking at having to pay? Just rang renault and the guy wasn't very helpful.

Also, this may be a stupid question but I honestly don't know - would my insurance pay for it?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

This might give you an idea of what to expect: http://www.rac.co.uk/forum/showthrea...t=renault+clio
This may be connected to the poor wiring harnesses but also these suffer from wiring corrosion under the fuse box in the engine compartment.

Best to start at the beginning though and check the engine earth strap is in good condition and the battery terminals are clean and tight. The 'other light flashing' sounds like the immobiliser has kicked in so preventing it from starting. Try a spare key if you have one. He is wrong , other garages can fix your car, you just need to find the right one. If there is a Renault specialist near you they will do it. If not find one that does vehicle electrics. Its all very well to read codes but he should have looked at the live data to see what signals, voltages etc are being seen by the ecu.
