Yahoo! speed ad banned by watchdog

A Yahoo! advert with the tag line "faster is funner" has been banned by the advertising watchdog for potentially encouraging speeding.

The promotional ad for the email service BT Yahoo! Mail Beta showed two women driving a convertible with a blurred landscape in the background.

According to Yahoo!, the picture and headline simply illustrated the speed of the service and were "in no way related to motoring".

It said the blurred background was just to show it was a mountain path and there is no reference to the speed of the convertible.

However, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld the two complaints that claimed the advert promoted speeding and was "likely to cause harm".

It said: "We concluded that the combination of the headline and the image, portrayed speed in a way that might encourage motorists to drive irresponsibly and could therefore be seen to condone anti-social behaviour and irresponsible driving."

The ASA said the ad must not appear again in its current form.
