Winter boosts 4x4s' popularity

More and more drivers are thinking about buying off-road 4x4 vehicles after the tough winter led to many travel nightmares, it has been revealed.

Around 18% of motorists are considering the purchase of a 4x4 this year, website Compucars found.

About 15% plan to buy a compact executive car such as the BMW 3 Series, 13% want to go for a lower medium-sector vehicle such as the Volkswagen Golf while 11% prefer an upper medium-sector car such as the Ford Mondeo.

Only 5% are interested in buying a small car such as Audi TT, a Mini or a Ford Ka, the website said.

Rob Queen, Compucars group marketing manager, said: "It is no surprise that 4x4s are the most popular choice for motorists searching for their next car, given the dreadful winter driving conditions that UK motorists have been faced with during the past few weeks.

"In fact, the number of 4x4s viewed on Compucars rose 9.3% in December versus searches in November."
