Vehicle 'mows down sheep in field'

Police have launched an investigation to track down an individual who killed or injured more than a dozen sheep by deliberately running a vehicle over them in a barbaric act of animal cruelty.

Kent Police was alerted to the incident at a field in Wrotham, West Kent, on Monday morning.

Of the 15 sheep that were attacked, some had already died by the time officers arrived at the scene. Others had to be destroyed as they had broken or missing limbs and were suffering terrible pain, a police spokesman said.

Tyre tracks were visible on the ground of the field off the A20 London Road.

Part of a black moulded bumper bar was discovered in the field, the gate to which was found to have been opened. A serial number showed that the bumper bar belonged to a Mark I Land Rover Discovery.

Inspector Adrian Allen said: "This is a terrible crime that has resulted in great pain, distress and suffering and it is difficult to imagine who could do such a callous thing. We are keen to establish a motive for this attack as quickly as possible.

"If anyone knows someone with this type of vehicle that has sustained bumper damage or hears or knows anything that they think is relevant, they are urged to call the police."
