A drive out to Woolacombe beach in Devon or Weymouth beach in Dorset could be well worth the petrol.
Both beaches have been voted among the best in Europe, rivalling those of the French Riviera and Spain's Costa del Sol.
Woolacombe came fourth in a list of top European beaches compiled from travellers' reviews by TripAdvisor, while Weymouth was placed eighth.
Rhossili beach in Swansea (11th), St Brelade's Bay beach in Jersey (14th) and Porthminster beach at St Ives in Cornwall (18th) also made it into the top 20.
They made up the first five places in the top UK beach list, while Woolacombe - a three-mile stretch of golden sand between Morte Point and Baggy Point on the Devon coast - was 13th in the world's top beach table.
Rabbit beach at Lampedusa in Italy was voted the top beach in Europe, followed by Playa de Ses Illetes in Formentera in the Spanish Balearic Islands in second place and Elafonissi beach in Greece third.
Baia do Sancho in Brazil's Fernando de Noronha island chain was number one in the world.
