The accelerator problems that car giant Toyota has been experiencing in recent weeks have resurfaced again after it was revealed the California Highway Patrol helped stop a runaway car stuck at high speed.
James Sikes was travelling along a highway in his Toyota Prius when the accelerator became stuck and he lost control.
He phoned police for help, and officers who pulled alongside the vehicle issued him with orders to push the brake pedal to the floor and apply the emergency brake.
The car manufacturers issued a statement in which it confirmed a specialist had been sent to San Diego to investigate the latest incident.
The accelerator problems have led to 8.5 vehicles being recalled worldwide, of which six million were in the US alone.
