The son of Tory MP Brian Binley has been jailed and his wife given a suspended prison sentence after they lied to cover up a drink-drive offence.
Former policeman Matthew Binley, 27, was sentenced to four months in prison and a two-year driving ban by Northampton Crown Court, while his mother Jacqueline received a two-year suspended sentence and 150 hours of community service.
Matthew Binley crashed his car while more than two times over the legal alcohol limit.
But his mother said she was driving the car at the time of the crash.
Both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and Matthew Binley admitted drink-driving.
The court heard that Matthew Binley returned to his flat in Leicester Street, Northampton, at about 11.30pm on May 22 last year after attending a wedding.
He then went to a nightclub in the town centre with friends.
It was on his way back, in the early hours of May 23, that he crashed his Alfa Romeo into a kerb on Harbour Road and deflated a tyre.
He was arrested after he called out a breakdown service to his vehicle and the recovery driver noticed he was drunk, prosecutor Piers Reed said.
