Potential spending on new or used cars over the next six months has reached the highest figure since September 2007, a poll has shown.
A survey of 1,994 adults by Sainsbury's found that would-be car buyers are ready to spend a total of £51 billion.
The number of people who plan to change their car in the next six months also hit a three-year high of 17%, compared to just 11% between September 2009 and February 2010.
Topping the list of potential spending are consumers in south east England who plan to spend £11.2 billion on a change of car in the next six months - a 5% increase from the amount during March-August 2010.
However, people in Yorkshire and Humberside, and East Anglia only intend to spend £1.8 billion on a new or used car over the next six months.
The area with the biggest rise in those looking to change their motor is the East Midlands, with a 12% increase in the next six months compared with the period March-August this year.
