Stormy weather causes travel chaos

Strong winds and heavy rain have caused chaos across the UK's transport network as millions of people attempt to travel home for Christmas.

One area particularly badly hit by the adverse weather conditions was Dorset where firefighters rescued 25 people who became trapped in their cars by flood water. Crews were dispatched to help people stranded in the towns of Sturminster, Blandford, Shaftesbury, Sherborne and Wimborne.

Road, rail, air and sea passengers all had their journeys affected by the weather as roads were forced to close and trains were delayed or cancelled.

Flights to Gatwick Airport in Sussex are also expected to be diverted elsewhere.

Emergency services are working to clear fallen trees from railways and roads and energy companies are trying to restore electricity to thousands of homes following power cuts.
