Six litre 'baby Rolls' hits 155mph

Rolls-Royce's new Ghost model will be helped to speeds of 155mph by its 6.6 litre V12 engine, the luxury car company revealed.

The Ghost, dubbed the baby Rolls and selling for £165,000, will also be able to accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds, the company added.

The four-door, five-seater car, which has an eight-speed automatic gearbox, is expected to be unveiled in September at the Frankfurt motor show.

Helmut Riedl, Rolls-Royce engineering director, said that first and foremost "the Ghost is a Rolls-Royce".

He added: Despite its extraordinary performance figures it has been engineered for effortless composure and refined power delivery."

Tom Purves, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars chief executive, claims the ghost is about "a careful blend of attributes" rather than any one thing.

He said: "A Rolls-Royce should carry its power with grace, agility and refinement and this is never achieved by a focus on outright performance. Mastery comes in creating a balance and having driven the Ghost again recently I can say confidently that our engineering team has achieved this in fine style."

UK and European customers will be able to get hold of the Ghost from late in 2009.
