Six men have been arrested after police discovered 16 lambs crammed inside two cars.
West Midlands police said some of the animals were on the back seat of one of the cars while others were found packed into the boot.
The men were arrested after the Vauxhall Cavalier and Rover cars were stopped on the M5, near Oldbury in the West Midlands.
Police said the lambs' owner from Toddington in Gloucestershire will be reunited with his flock.
In the meantime, they will be cared for by a farmer in Shrewsbury.
A police spokesman said: "Officers found eight lambs in the boot of one of the vehicles with another three on the back seats.
"In the second vehicle, four lambs were found in the boot and one in the foot well.
"They had been tightly bound and were obviously distressed."
