Peter Shilton, who is England's most capped footballer, will appear in court next week after being arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, according to police.
The ex-England goalkeeper, 63, was arrested on February 24 outside the home of a female friend in Manor Road, Colchester, Essex.
He was said to have been found behind the wheel after having consumed an excess amount of alcohol.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "A 63-year-old man will appear at Colchester Magistrates' Court on March 19."
The former footballer, of Kenilworth, Warwickshire, made 125 appearances on the pitch for England.
He has played in more than 1,000 competitive matches, and has represented 11 clubs during his career, including Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Derby and Stoke City.
