Drivers heading to a new shopping mall near the Olympic Park are to be subjected to security checks, it has been revealed.
According to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), random spot checks will be carried out on vehicles visiting the Westfield shopping centre, which is due to open on September 13.
Security guards will search the cars at areas on Warton Road, Penny Brookes Street and the Lea Interchange off the A12. This exercise will continue into the first year of the centre's operation.
The mall is linked by the road system to the Olympic Park in East London.
"With Westfield so close to the Olympic Park and with vehicle access to it directly accessed from the Park, it is an obvious and important part of our security plans. We will make the checks as quick and unobtrusive as possible," said LOCOG chief executive Paul Deighton.
