Formula One legend Michael Schumacher is fighting for his life after suffering a serious head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps.
Schumacher, 44, crashed while skiing off-piste in Meribel at 11.07am local time on Sunday and was taken to the University Hospital of Grenoble.
According to hospital spokesman Jean-Marc Grenier, the seven-times world champion was in a coma when he arrived and needed neurosurgical treatment. He is currently in a critical condition, the spokesman told Sky News.
The German's wife Corinna and two children are with him in hospital, the reports say.
Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said he was wearing a helmet during the crash when he fell on his head. He was not skiing alone but no one else was involved in the accident.
Earlier, the director of the Meribel resort was reported to have said that the injury was "not very serious".
