More than 200 major roadworks projects are set to be cleared in time for the Easter holiday, motorists are being promised by Highways England.
The move will improve journeys for millions of motorists who are planning to head off for a break over the four-day holiday.
Despite this, the RAC is warning that many roads will be heavily congested over the Easter break, with traffic particularly bad on Friday.
Highways England says over 130 projects on motorways and major A-roads will be finished by Maundy Thursday. And a further 75 will be suspended between Thursday and Tuesday March 29.
Roads Minister Andrew Jones says the announcement is good news for families who will be hitting the road over the double bank holiday weekend.
He adds that while road upgrades are essential there is no need for them to cause motorists to be needlessly held up.
Highways England says completing or suspending the 208 projects will help ensure 97% of routes will be clear of roadworks by 6am on Thursday.
Despite the move drivers are still being advised to are clear before setting off on a long journey.
