Regions braced for snow and gales

Winter is well and truly here as forecasters predict more snow to fall on parts of Britain.

Motorists in Scotland and northern England might want to purchasebreakdown cover in case they get stuck, as snow, sleet and hail has been predicted to fall in northern parts of the UK.

Meanwhile, motorists across the UK have been warned to take care as some roads were icy in northern parts of Britain.

While most of Britain will be spared snowfall, severe weather warnings have been issued in Scotland by theMet Office.

Lindsay Dovey, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "In western Scotland and north-west England there will be snow over the high ground, and sleet and hail at low levels.

"Gusts of wind up to 60mph are expected across western parts of northern England, and temperatures will range from 1C (33.8F) in Scotland to 11 (51.8F) in the south of Britain."

Forecasters also warned that Orkney and Shetland could be subjected to severe winds.
