Red Arrows hit the road for charity

The group, which also includes four Battle of Britain memorial flight pilots, will travel from Land's End to John O'Groats for charities including Help for Heroes and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

The journey, which would normally be over in around 51 minutes in a Red Arrow Hawk jet, will take four days, organisers say.

Coloured smoke emitters have been fitted to the scooters - 125cc Vespa LXs - to add to the sense of occasion.

Most of those taking part are novice motorcyclists who have only recently taken their Compulsory Basic Training.

They will set off on September 30.
