For the third year running, the RAC has retained the title of best breakdown assistance company.
In a customer satisfaction survey by marketing company JD Power and Associates, the RAC scored 779 points out of a possible 1,000, beating fellow breakdown company AA into second place.
Based on responses from 3,012 people, JD Power found that on average motorists waited 55 minutes for assistance to arrive compared with waiting 63 minutes in the last survey.
It also found that engine and mechanical problems accounted for almost half of all calls for breakdown assistance.
The study found that customers satisfaction was higher than the last survey, but only when they were assisted by a mechanic from the breakdown company, and not a sub-contractor.
The survey, now its in 11th year, asked breakdown customers how they rated the time taken to reach motorists who had broken down, the service provided and the breakdown company call centres which they had to deal with while stranded.
