A 1975 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Long-Wheelbase Limousine, which was once owned by Princess Margaret and later by US actor Burt Reynolds, has gone under the hammer for over £21,000 at the Rockingham Castle in Leicestershire.
The long-wheelbase Silver Shadow, which was supplied to the personal order of Princess Margaret, was purchased by a male buyer for £21,850.
The car, which was auctioned byBonhams, incorporates many special features requested by the princess, including leather trimmed door cappings, flat side indicators fitted in line with chromed body mouldings, nuella black hide interior, and cardinal red paintwork with contrasting gold coachlines.
In addition, it was requested that the seats be made "soft and comfortable" to make the princess's journeys more pleasurable.
Tim Schofield, the UK head and director of the Bonhams motor car department, said: "We are all very happy with the sale."
Several people mistakenly thought that the car, which was expected to fetch £20,000-22,000 at auction, belonged to British Rail on account of its interior, Mr Schofield said.
He added: "In Burt Reynolds' time he had carpet fitted with his own monogram initials - BR - and some people thought it belonged to British Rail.
"It's funny, things like that that make this so interesting."
A spokeswoman for Bonhams added: "This car represents a unique insight into a Rolls-Royce that encapsulated the tastes of both royalty and Hollywood."
